The Modern Church

Introduction

Why does music seem to have such a prominent place above Scripture in the Christian Fellowship today? Is the “Modern Church” teaching the whole counsel of God or is it just tickling the ears of the attendees? Why must there be such grandiose edifices that are only used a few times a week? What about the thousands that go hungry and sleep on the streets?

Does this small simple looking building bring glory to God?

Simple Fellowship Hall

Or

Grandiose Edifices – Is this what God is looking for?

The Judgment – Read Matthew 25:31-46, then ask yourself once more, “Is this what God is looking for?”

The individuals who promote the “Modern Church Music,” say it helps get people into the service. Thus, one must ask what happened to the power of the Word? Is the Church called to entertain people with music or minister to their souls?

Emotions

In Hebrews 4:12, it says,

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

This style of adulation; that is music, is so prominent; one could almost see the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the shadow of music. Yes, music can and does arouse an emotion, but this is only for a short time. It is the good news of Jesus Christ in the Gospels that give eternal life.

The gospel gives one a high view of reality by planting one’s feet, on solid ground. Music can only produce a feeling, but the gospel gives one life. The Gospel feeds the soul; music feeds the emotion, an emotion that is like the wind it blows where it wishes.

Sickness in America

Maybe the reason America is, so sin sick is an overabundance of life in music instead of the Scriptures. Young people have music blasting into their ears via one’s cell phone, iPad or iPod. People need the Good News not an emotional high from music.

This sickness that has spread throughout the Church today is the result of feel good sermons.

The Cure from The Sickness

If Scripture is a sharp two-edged sword that it is going to cut through to the soul and reveal the sin in one’s life. For the Sword to work the whole council has to be preached.

These emotions only come from watered-down sermons that rarely speak of sin. Combined with this emotional music, and one has a recipe for spiritual disaster. Where is the sound footing to put one’s trust in?

Brother Lawrence says in, The Practice of the Presence of God: The Best Rule of Holy Life. “He was pleased when he could take up a straw from the ground for the love of GOD.”

The Church has lost the original concept of worship purely for the love, of God. Many Fellowships today offer music as an enticement to get younger people to the service. The word of God becomes sacrificed by watering it down. They sacrifice the Scripture, so there are no hurt feelings only to keep them returning.

When King David sang, it was the word of God from the Psalms, giving glory to God the Father. However, today this is old fashioned, yet it worked for hundreds of years?

In Hebrews 4:12, it says,

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

In Psalm 101:1, it says,

I will sing of loving kindness and justice, To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.

King David’s style of singing was to resonate, the word of God, back to Him; this is the perfect way of praising God. It is our voice in praise that God wants to hear not some music cranked up so high it shakes the windows. Singing should be a prayer to God, not an echo of the same words repeatedly as most so-called Christian music is today.

In Matthew 6:7, it says,

Moreover, when one is praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do.

Speak to God as one would to a loving father, do not repeat the same words over many times into thinking God will hear as your result of repetition.

Divine Power

For divine power, one must be in the Word of God daily. Faith comes through the word.

In Romans 10:17, it says,

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

In 2 Corinthians 5:7, it says,

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

In Ephesians 6:11-16, it says,

Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

Our power comes from the Word of God NOT music; music gives temporal joy, but the Word gives eternal peace. It is the Holy Spirit, which has charge of the service, not the music director. One cannot find in the Scriptures that music will increase faith in Jesus Christ, but on the other hand, the Word of God will.

In Galatians 2:20, it says,

I having died with Christ, and it is no longer I, who live, but Christ lives in me. The life which, I now have in the flesh I inhabit by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

In Romans 10:17, it says,

So, faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of Christ.

In Hebrews 11:6, it says,

Moreover, without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is the reward of those who seek Him.

Arousing the emotions in an individual cannot help them to increase their faith in Jesus Christ. For when the high fades and when their feet are back on the ground, they will grapple with their same problems once again. With faith, in Jesus Christ, and NO emotional high one can recognize their problems with confidence knowing that God is in control. Does our power come from the Word of God or music?

Called to His Purpose

In Romans 8:28, it says,

Moreover, one knows that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

The way one reacts, in a situation will depend on their experiences in faith and trust in God. Hearing too much music and not enough Scripture will leave one on slippery ground. By reading and meditating on the Word of God, this will provide a healthy life in Jesus Christ. Music of any type is incapable of accomplishing this task.

The Romans and Greeks know the power of music for either producing a high or low in the entire army. The Greek word is “Pathos” which in short, means to arouse emotion in someone either beneficial or detrimental. Music only gives an emotional feeling with little to none of the spiritual powers mankind needs for life.

In Ezra 7:10, it says,

For Ezra set his heart to study the law of the Lord and to practice it and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.

In 2 Timothy 2:15, it says,

Be diligent to present one’s self-approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

Music created by man is fleeting, but one day, a new song will be on the lips of every saved person in heaven, but remember this, God created and composed this beautiful song, not man.

Music Director

Contemplate these next few statements if you please. Why are there so many individual fellowships always looking for a Worship Leader? Could it be that these people keep moving on to the next Fellowship because they receive a higher salary? Could it be they think they should have more control over the service, and not getting it, so they move on?

Conclusion

In 2 Timothy 4:3, it says,

For the time will come when they do not endure sound doctrine, but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their desires.

Today Christian music and trinkets are a profitable venture. Since one lives within the world, that seems only to care for financial gain even among religious people. Walking into any Christian bookstore, this becomes immediately apparent to the casual observer. One will see an enormous amount of music on displayed.

Many young pastors have stated that music is used to get people into the pews. If music is needed to fill the seats, then the preaching of the Word of God is weak. There is no comprise when it comes to Scripture.

In Hebrews 4:12, it says,

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

To bring lost souls into the fellowship hall, you need sound teaching, of the word. It is the truth that will bring people in the fellowship hall to hear God’s Word. However, is it God who gives growth, not a man or the music. Music will keep people only so long and once board they leave, but the Word of God will keep them there for more truth.

In 1 Corinthians 3:7, it says,

So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters are anything, but God, who causes the growth.

In 1 Corinthians 1:17, it says,

Therefore, the cross of Christ would not be made void.

People will come if the Church lives by faith in Christ, and does not give lip service. Many people know there is something wrong with them, but just cannot put their finger on the problem. The gospel will change their hearts, not the music they hear. Music has no staying power.

Emotion is the caboose of a Train, and it is incapable of moving the Train. The real strength of the Train is in its engine. The gospel message is the driving force of the Train and is the saving power of the individual soul. Music is the caboose and has no potential to change lives. Ministers of the Word need to spend more time in the preaching and teaching of the Gospel than on music. Only this will improve the church in America and the world.

About Dr. George Gallant

I have had the opportunity to work in many fields in my life, and excelled in all of them. I started as a mechanic in the Army then went to the Infantry in Vietnam. After returning to America, I worked as a mechanic for a few more years off and on until I found a position as a Dialysis Technician until I became a Chief specialist in a major Boston hospital. In 1981, I became a Police Office in a small town in Northeast Georgia and continued to work with law-enforcement for seven years. I also preached the Word of God in the Toccoa community and wished that I could have found a church that would have taken me on to preach every week. In 1993, I became a computer programmer for many years and loved that job much. In 2003, my wife came down with the worst breast cancer one could get, so I retired and took care of her until her passing in 2006. Then in 2007, I moved to China and started teaching both verbal English and American History to high-school students; this by far was the best job I ever had.
