Marriage, Divorce & Remarriage

Introduction

There are many Christians, who believe if one is divorced before becoming a Christian he or she has no problem for remarriage. These Christians claim this previous marriage means nothing, and in the sight of the Lord, it has absolutely no value. The question is, is this, a viable truth or a lie perpetrated by Satan as truth?

This article will attempt to show what Scripture teaches concerning marriage, and let the individual reader decide for them-self.

Marriage

God performed the first marriage in the Garden of Eden with one man and one woman. This marriage, thus laid the foundation of what God intended marriage to be.

In Genesis 2:21-24, it says,

21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22 The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man and brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” 24, For this reason, a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

As time passed this union of marriage between one man, and one woman became corrupted and had brought divorce and multiple marriages as a way of life. However, in God’s view, this concept of divorce and many marriages was never an option.

The Law of Divorce & Remarriage

Moses gave the people what they desired, the ability to divorce of their spouse for anything, demonstrating the hardness of their heart. This hardness of their heart was not really toward their spouse, but towards God in refusing to be obedient and to LOVE each other.

One could easily say that divorce, is the ultimate cruelty on the part of the individual, who starts the divorce process toward their spouse, and their children. Divorce is the result of immorality on the part of one person. This immorality often starts with wandering eyes and a desire for a younger person.

One can see an excellent example of the multiple marriages, divorces, and remarriages by just looking at Hollywood today. These actors and actresses will divorce on an average of three or more times throughout his or her life. The men when they remarry will likely marry an individual twenty or more years younger than themselves. For these men, it is their ego that comes into play.

However, there are rare circumstances when you do hear of a Hollywood couple staying together until one passes on, but not very often. These individuals should be commended for their loyalty and love for each other.

Nevertheless, in Hollywood divorce is predominant. The book of Deuteronomy speaks of an abomination when a person who is married and gets divorced, remarries and then severs this new relationship with their spouse and returns to the original spouse.

In Deuteronomy 24:1-4, is says,

1 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out from his house, 2 and she leaves his house and goes and becomes another man’s wife, 3 and if the latter husband turns against her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her to be his wife, 4 then her former husband who sent her away is not allowed to take her again to be his wife, since she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the LORD, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance.

Hollywood brings this evil to fruition regularly. When one denies the God of creation, sin is the result. I have found no Scripture given by God to support any reason for divorce except one, the immorality of a spouse.

A divorce before or after becoming a Christian, if you are not the innocent party and remarry you have committed adultery.  This adultery is not perpetual as the Church would have one to believe. However, the sting of one not innocent will always have the term adulter hanging over their head.

In Matthew 19:8-9, it says,

8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning, it has not been this way. 9 “And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

God’s View on Divorce

In Malachi 2:16, it says,

16 “For I hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel, “and him who covers his garment with wrong,” says the LORD of hosts. “So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.”

God’s viewpoint is, He says, “For I hate divorce,” the word hate is unyielding when it comes from the God of creation.

Hollywood has perpetuated and fanned the flame of divorce as acceptable, but in the eyes of God, this will NEVER BE.

Who is Exempt from The Divorce Law

Only the innocent of an immoral act from a spouse who commits adultery can remarry. This blameless victim can remarry without the stigma of committing adultery if they choose to remarry.

Conclusion

God hates all divorce, even the non-Christian ones. People that claim otherwise have no correct understanding of Scripture. This also applies to the so-called annulment granted by the Church, if an individual remarries and is not the innocent party, they are committing adultery.

Because the government controls marriage, they believe they can control the right to grant a divorce for any cause, they are wrong once again.

Marriage is the hardest work one will ever do, simply because it is the joining of two entirely separate personalities together that over time, they will work to blend their lives, but still stay independent.

May God grant all who read this article and plans to wed or married know His strength to show the world that God is the glue that holds you together.

Again, there is no scriptural support for the non-Christian marriage and subsequent remarriage without the stigma of adultery unless you are the actual innocent party.

Hollywood is the domain of Satan in America, and spreading the sin of divorce and immorality through its movies is their goal.

About Dr. George Gallant

I have had the opportunity to work in many fields in my life, and excelled in all of them. I started as a mechanic in the Army then went to the Infantry in Vietnam. After returning to America, I worked as a mechanic for a few more years off and on until I found a position as a Dialysis Technician until I became a Chief specialist in a major Boston hospital. In 1981, I became a Police Office in a small town in Northeast Georgia and continued to work with law-enforcement for seven years. I also preached the Word of God in the Toccoa community and wished that I could have found a church that would have taken me on to preach every week. In 1993, I became a computer programmer for many years and loved that job much. In 2003, my wife came down with the worst breast cancer one could get, so I retired and took care of her until her passing in 2006. Then in 2007, I moved to China and started teaching both verbal English and American History to high-school students; this by far was the best job I ever had.
