When is a Couple Married?

Introduction

At what moment does the man, and the woman unite as one in holy matrimony? For hundreds of years, there are ceremonies before witnesses. Just before this marriage ceremony ends, the individual presiding will announce, “You are now husband and wife.” At this moment society recognizes the young couple as married. So, when are these individuals united in marriage before God?

The Marriage Before God

Genesis 2:23, says,

23 The LORD God fashioned a woman from the rib He took from the man and brought her to the man. The man said, she is now of my bones and flesh of my flesh; I now call her a woman because God took her from the man’s body. The man shall leave his father and his mother, and joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh (NASB).

The marriage between a man and a woman is and always has been in the domain of God, not humanity. God brought the woman to Adam, and Adam named her Eve. The marriage ceremony was on earth, yet God presided it with no fanfare as we have today.

The Fanfare

Today there is much exaltation with a banquet, drinking, music, and dancing, in it of itself nothing wrong. Even Jesus and His disciples went to a wedding feast with these elements in it. That is not the point. So, when does this union between a man and a woman take Place?

But if one looks at the Biblical record, one can see something different from what we have today. When God brought Eve to Adam, they became husband and wife, at that moment. There was no fanfare. God issued one command, “be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.”

Genesis 1:28, says,

28 God blessed them, and God said to them, be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the planet (NASB).

The True Union of Marriage

Adam and Eve possessed no marriage license given them by the county courthouse. Their union in marriage was then as today between the individuals and God alone, not the government.

The witness to this joining of Adam and Eve was God the Father, and the heavenly hosts. Adam and Eve did not have to venture to the county courthouse in seeking a marriage license. It was a wedding performed by God, bringing Adam and Eve together. Marriage is the same today; God is the joining influence, not a pastor or the Justice of the Peace.

Marriage happens when two hearts, one man, and one woman give their soul to the other for life before God. At this moment they become one, not in the sexual union.

Matthew 1:18-20, says,

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary espoused to Joseph; before they came together, she is pregnant with a child of the Holy Ghost.

19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, but send her away in private.

20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for the child in her is of the Holy Ghost (NASB).

Joseph and Mary even before their sexual union were husband and wife. People today want you to believe a biological union is necessary. Joseph shows this natural sexual union is not part of the marital union. Marriage is giving one man to one woman for life.

Marriage is for Life

Marriage is for life, yet one will say, “let it end in divorce,” again, let us look at what the scriptures say.

Matthew 19:3-9, says,

3 The Pharisees came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and the two shall be one flesh?

6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined, let not man put asunder.

7 They say unto him, why did Moses then command to give a document of divorce, and to put her away?

8 He said unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning, it was not so.

9 And I say unto you; whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery: and whoso marries her will commit adultery (NASB).

Once again, we read, it is God doing the joining; not a man or the government, “Therefore, what God has joined, let no man separate.” The immoral acts of an individual allow the innocent one to divorce. Divorce otherwise is not an option, but God will always forgive if one asks.

1 John 1:9-10, says,

9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from every unrighteousness.

10 If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us (NASB).

Psalm 103:12-14, says,

12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

13 Just as a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.

14 For He knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust (NASB).

When God forgives, He forgives 100% and not as man does.

Scripture calls Joseph and Mary husband and wife. Yet, according to Jewish custom, and law were they married? However, before God they have married and are now one; otherwise, Mary could not be the mother of Jesus. Remember, Joseph wanted to divorce Mary because he found her to be pregnant. Thus, leading Joseph believing Mary was not a moral person. However, God intervened and told Joseph the whole story of Mary being with child.

Matthew 1:19, says,

19 Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away in private (NASB).

A woman back in that era and pregnant out of wedlock must be a prostitute.

According to Jewish customs, they were just pledged to each other, yet a betrothal was a marriage without the ceremony. One sees that Joseph loved Mary much, but did not want to go through with the wedding, why? Joseph thought Mary was unclean because she was pregnant. However, an angel of God spoke to him in a dream and said everything is fine and told Joseph to take Mary as his wife. Just before the Angel of God talked to him; he was contemplating a divorce, but God stopped Joseph, before divorcing Mary, as he, “planned to send her away in secret.”

Matthew 1:20-25, says,

20 But when Joseph considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, be not afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.

22 Now, this took place to fulfill what the Lord spoke through the prophet:

23 BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL, which translated means, GOD WITH US.

24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,

25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son, and he called His name Jesus (NASB).

Joseph took Mary as a wife, and not become his wife, for she was his wife and this with no pomp and ceremony recorded in scripture. When a man and a woman commit to each other, it is at that moment; they become husband and wife before the creator God. The marriage ceremony is for the family and friends of the couple.

Conclusion

When a man and a woman make such a commitment to each other, they must remember that they married each other before God. Now if they break this relationship, then you are divorcing each other. So, do not commit this sin and work out your problem and God will reward you for this. Before God’s eyes, the two are now one and married because of their commitment to each other. Remember, marriage is from God, and the pomp and ceremony of this wedding come from men.

God presides over the marriage union between one man and one woman. Do not let the government fool you they have no right to the wedding; this authority lies with God over the joining of the man and the woman.

Please, do not take this marriage commitment to each other as a joke.

God did not turn over His authority over marriage to any government.

About Dr. George Gallant

I have had the opportunity to work in many fields in my life, and excelled in all of them. I started as a mechanic in the Army then went to the Infantry in Vietnam. After returning to America, I worked as a mechanic for a few more years off and on until I found a position as a Dialysis Technician until I became a Chief specialist in a major Boston hospital. In 1981, I became a Police Office in a small town in Northeast Georgia and continued to work with law-enforcement for seven years. I also preached the Word of God in the Toccoa community and wished that I could have found a church that would have taken me on to preach every week. In 1993, I became a computer programmer for many years and loved that job much. In 2003, my wife came down with the worst breast cancer one could get, so I retired and took care of her until her passing in 2006. Then in 2007, I moved to China and started teaching both verbal English and American History to high-school students; this by far was the best job I ever had.
